Fast story of Mata Mahagauri-
According to Devi Bhagwat Purana, Goddess Parvati used to eat only tuberous fruits and leaves during her penance. Later the mother started doing penance by drinking only air. Mother Parvati gained great glory through penance and due to this she was named Mahagauri.

Pleased with mother’s penance, Lord Shiva asked her to take a bath in the Ganga. When Mother Parvati went to bathe in the Ganges, one form of the Goddess appeared with dark complexion, who was called Kaushiki and another form appeared like the bright moon, who was called Mahagauri. Mother Gauri does welfare of every devotee of hers and frees them from all the problems.
