After the nine-day festival of Navratri, the festival of Dussehra is being celebrated on 12 October this year. This festival is celebrated for the victory of good over evil. On this day Lord Rama killed Lankapati Ravana. Mahishasura was killed by Mother Durga on this day. That is why it is called Vijayadashami. On this day, effigies of Ravana, Kumbhkaran and Meghnad are burnt across the country. On this day, after waking up in the morning and taking bath, the first thing to be done is Shastra Puja in Vijay Muhurta. There is also a tradition of worshiping Shami on this day. First of all, offer Ganga water and do Tilak and light a lamp under the tree. This provides relief from Saturn’s defects. On this day sweets are offered to Lord Rama. It is said that on this day Lord Rama should worship Shami tree after burning Ravana. It is said that Shami tree has the ability to turn even inauspicious things into auspicious ones. Shami’s idol was worshiped by most of the kings and Kshatriyas.
Dussehra 2024: This year Dussehra date is starting on 12th October and Ravana is killed in the evening on Dashami, hence Dussehra will be celebrated on 12th October. According to Drik Panchang, the festival of Vijayalakshmi is on 12 October. If you want to perform Navami puja on this day, then do it between 05:06 to 06:20 in the morning. Those who want to perform night puja can do it during Amrit Kaal between 06:28 to 08:15.
Donating to ancestors on this day is also considered auspicious. On Dussehra, a four-sided lamp should be lit at the door in the evening.
