Why is Ganesh festival celebrated for 10 days?
According to the Puranas, Ganesha, the son of Lord Shankar and Goddess Parvati, was born on Ganesh Chaturthi. Bappa is worshipped with rituals for 10 days as Ganesh Utsav. All the wishes of those who worship with full devotion are fulfilled.
According to the legend, Maharishi Ved Vyas had invoked Lord Ganesha to compose the Mahabharata. Maharishi Vyas kept reciting the shlokas and Lord Ganapati kept writing the Mahabharata for 10 days without stopping. In these ten days, a layer of dust accumulated on Lord Ganesha. 10 days later, i.e. on Anant Chaturdashi, Bappa cleaned himself by taking a bath in the Saraswati river. From this day onwards, Ganesh Utsav started being celebrated for ten days.
