Historical and mythological background
According to historians, Kakan Math was built by King Kirti Singh of the Kachwaha dynasty in the 11th century for his queen Kanavati, who was an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva. This is the reason why this temple was named ‘Kakan Math’. The style of this temple is based on the Dravidian architecture. The main temple is about 100 feet high, and a huge Shivalinga is installed in the sanctum sanctorum, which does not have a burning – which makes it different from other Shiva temples.

According to local people, the presence of invisible powers is felt in the temple at night. So the temple is closed after sunset, and no person dare to stay here. This mystery has made the temple even more mysterious.

The Indian Archaeological Department and many scientists have studied intensely on the structure of this temple, but till now they have not understood how such heavy stone without any binding materials are on height. This temple is also an extraordinary sample from the point of view of architecture and engineering.
