The story is like this-

Lord Shiva and Parvati were seated on the tiger throne along with all their followers under the huge banyan tree on the holy land of Kailash mountain. The strong Veerbhadra, Bhringi, Shringi and Nandi were adorning the court of Sadashiv on their respective guards. On this occasion, Maharani Parvati asked Lord Shiva with folded hands that O Maheshwar, I am very fortunate that I have chosen a husband like you. Can I know what good deeds I have done? You are omniscient. Kindly describe them to me, your maid.

On hearing such a prayer of Maharani Parvati, Shankar Ji said, you had collected a very good virtue, due to which you have attained me. That is a very secret fast, but I am telling you. That fast is famous by the name of Teej of Shukla Paksha of Bhado month. This fast is such that it has Moon among the stars, Sun among the nine planets, Brahmin among the castes, Ganga among the gods, Mahabharata among the Puranas, Sama among the Vedas, mind among the senses, it is so great. He told that the Teej which falls on the day of Hasta Nakshatra is considered very virtuous. On hearing this, Parvati Ji said that I want to hear in detail when and how I had observed the Teej fast. On hearing this, Shankar Ji said- Fortunate Uma- Himachal is the best mountain in the north of Bharatvarsh, its king is Himachal, there you were born to fortunate Queen Maina. You had started worshipping me since childhood. On growing a little older, you went with your friend and performed penance in the caves of Himalayas to get me.

You did penance sitting on rocks outside in summer, you did penance outside in water during rain, you stood in water during winter and kept meditating on me. During this time you sniffed air, ate leaves of trees and your body became weak. Seeing such a condition, Maharaj Himachal got very worried. He started worrying about your marriage. On this occasion Narad Dev came. The king welcomed him and asked the reason for his visit.

Then Narad ji said, Rajan I have come on behalf of Lord Vishnu. I want that your beautiful daughter gets a suitable groom, so Lord Vishnu, the resident of Vaikunth has accepted your daughter, do you accept it. King Himachal said, Maharaj it is my good fortune that Vishnu ji has accepted my daughter and I will definitely give him my daughter Uma’s hand in marriage. After being assured of this, Narad ji went to Vaikunth and told about the completion of his marriage with Lord Vishnu. Hearing this you felt very sad, and you went to your friend and started lamenting. Seeing your lamentation, the friend knowing your wish said, Devi I will take you to such a cave for penance where even King Himachal cannot reach. Saying this, Uma along with her friend disappeared into the deep caves of Himalaya. Then King Himachal got scared, and started lamenting while searching for Parvati that how will the world I have given to Vishnu ji be completed. Saying this he fainted. At that time, you, along with your friend, reached a deep cave and started my fast without food and water. You brought a Lingam made of sand from the river and started worshipping it with various flowers. That day was the third day of the Shukla Paksha of Bhadra month, Hasta Nakshatra. Due to your worship, my throne shook and I went and gave you darshan. Going there, I told you – O Goddess, I am very pleased with your fast and worship. You can ask me for your wish.

Hearing this, you prayed in shame that you are omniscient, the feelings of my heart are not hidden from you, I want to have you as my husband, hearing this I gave you all the blessings you desired and disappeared. After that you went to the river to immerse the idol made of sand where your city residents met Himachal on the river bank. They started crying after meeting you that you are in such a terrible forest where lions and snakes live, where the life of a human can be in danger, on your request to go to the house of such a father, you said that father you accepted my marriage with Lord Vishnu, for this reason I will live in the forest and give up my life. Then he said, do not grieve, I will never marry you with Lord Vishnu. I will marry the same Sadashiv. After this Maharaja Himachal married you and me with Queen Maina.
