There are many temples of Lord Vitthal Nath here where he is seated with Goddess Rukmini. Most of the people also worship Lord Vitthal by the name of Vithoba, so today through this article we are telling you how and why Lord Vishnu got this name. And what is the interesting story behind it?
Interesting story of Shri Hari Vitthal-
According to the story, once Goddess Rukmini, angry with Lord Vishnu over some issue, left Dwarka. After which Lord Vishnu, searching for him, reached Dindi Forest, where he found Goddess Rukmini and his anger was calmed. At the same time, a devotee of Lord Vishnu lived in an ashram there, whose name was Pundalik. He used to serve his parents a lot. Lord Vishnu, pleased with Pundalik’s devotion, accompanied Goddess Rukmini to his ashram. But then Pundalik was busy serving his parents and in such a situation, when Sri Hari asked to meet Pundalik, Pundalik asked God to wait for a while.
Pundalik threw a brick near Lord Vishnu and asked him to stand on it and wait. After which God listened to his devotee and stood on the brick and started waiting for him. Along with this, Goddess Rurukmini also stood on the brick and started waiting. When Pundalik came to his parents after serving them, Lord Vishnu asked him to ask for a boon.
When Lord Vishnu asked Pundalik to ask for a boon, Pundalik requested Shri Hari to stay here. After which, seeing this devotion of the devotee, Shri Hari stood on the same brick, placing his hands on his waist, in a happy posture. It is said that this issue itself came to be known as Vitthal Avatar. Because brick is called Vit in Marathi, the Lord was named Vitthal because of standing on a brick.
