Story of Varuthini Ekadashi
Once upon a time, a king named Mandhata ruled on the banks of the Narmada River. He was a great ascetic. There came a time when a wild bear came during the austerity of the king and chewed his feet, but the king was absorbed in penance. The bear dragged the king into the forest. Seeing the bear, the king became even more frightened. During this time he prayed to Lord Vishnu to protect his life. Hearing his call, God appeared there and saved the king’s life by killing the bear. By then the bear had eaten the king’s leg. Because of this he was very sad. Seeing the king in this situation, Lord Vishnu told him a solution. God asked the king to do Varuthi Ekadashi.
The king followed the advice of God and observed the fast of Varuthini Ekadashi and worshiped the idol of Varaha avatar. After this, the king got a beautiful body again with the effect of this fast. After death, he attained heaven. Thus Varuthini Ekadashi started.
