Sixteen Monday fasting story—
Once Mother Parvati and Lord Shiva were traveling in the mortal world. While travelling, he came to Amravati city of Vidarbha country. There was a beautiful Shiva temple in that city, so Mahadev started living there with Mother Parvati. One day Parvati asked Shiva to play backgammon. Shivji also agreed and started playing backgammon.

At that time, Mother Parvati asked the priest who came to perform daily aarti in the temple, “Who will win in Chaucer among us?” He was a priest and a devotee of Lord Shiva, so he immediately said, “Mahadev ji will win. “When the game of backgammon ended, Parvati won, while Shiva lost. When Parvati angrily tried to curse the priest, Lord Shiva stopped her and said that this was a game of fate and it was not her fault. Still, Mother Parvati cursed him to become a leper. He was suffering from leprosy for a long time.

One day when an Apsara came to worship Lord Shiva in that temple, she saw the leprosy of the priest. When Apsara asked the priest the reason for leprosy, he told her the whole story. Apsara told that priest that to get rid of this leprosy, he should fast on sixteen Mondays. That priest asked what was the way to observe the fast. On Monday, one should take bath and wear clean clothes and make a Panjiri from half a kilo of flour. It should be divided into three parts and Lord Shiva should be worshiped in Pradosh, then one third of the Panjiri should be given as Prasad to the people coming for the Aarti. In this way, this method should be followed till sixteen Mondays. On the 17th Monday, make churma from quarter wheat flour and offer it to Lord Shiva and distribute it among the people, this will cure your leprosy. In this way, by fasting for sixteen Mondays, his leprosy was cured and he became happy.

One day Shiva and Parvati returned to that temple and found the priest completely healthy. Mother Parvati asked the priest the secret to improving her health. The priest told that his leprosy was cured because he had kept fast on 16 Mondays. Parvati ji became very happy after hearing about this fast. His son also observed this fast, due to which he came back home and became obedient. The narrator asked his mother the reason for his mental change, who returned him home. Pavarti told him that the reason behind all this was the worship of sixteen Mondays. Karthikeya was very happy to hear this.

To fulfill that vow, Kartikeya returned from abroad to meet his distant Brahmin friend. On Monday sixteen, his friend came back to meet him. Karthikeya told his friend the glory of worshiping on sixteen Mondays. Hearing this, the Brahmin friend also thought of performing puja on sixteen Mondays for marriage. One day the king was preparing to marry his daughter. Many princes came to marry the king’s daughter. The king made a bet that whoever put the elephant garland around his neck would get his daughter married. That Brahmin was also the same, and luckily the elephant put a garland around his neck. As per the condition, the king married his daughter to that Brahmin.

One day the princess asked the Brahmin, what virtue did the elephant do when she left all the other princes and put the garland around your neck? He said, Dear, I told my friend Kartikeya that I kept fast on sixteen Mondays, so I found a bride like Lakshmi. Hearing this, the princess was very impressed and kept a fast on sixteen Mondays to get a son. She gave birth to a beautiful son. When the son grew up, he asked the mother what she did that gave her a son like me. Mother also told him the glory of sixteen Mondays.

Hearing this, he also kept this fast for the kingdom. The king was searching for a groom to marry his daughter, so people found him to be the right groom. As soon as the king got the information, he married his daughter to that boy. The king had no son, so he became king after a few years. Even after getting the throne, he continued fasting on Mondays. His wife was also asked to worship in the Shiva temple on the 17th Monday fast, but she did not come herself and sent the maid. After the worship of the Brahmin’s son was over, a voice from the sky said that you should keep your wife out of your palace, otherwise you will be destroyed. The Brahmin son was very surprised to hear this.

On returning to the palace he also told his courtiers. The courtiers said that the person due to whom he had attained the throne would be thrown out of the palace. But that Brahmin son took him out of the palace. Hungry and thirsty, the princess reached an unknown city. An old woman was going to the market there to sell thread. He saw the princess and asked her to help him in business. The princess also placed a basket on her head. After walking some distance she was blown away by a storm. Now the old woman started crying and considered the princess a fool and asked her to go away.

Then she went to an oilman’s house, where all the oil pots burst and oil started flowing. That oilman also considered him a fool and threw him out of there. Later she reached a beautiful pond, and as soon as she started drinking water, insects started moving in it, due to which the entire pond became blurry. Cursing her misfortune, she drank the dirty water and slept under a tree which had lost all its leaves. Now whenever she went near any tree, its leaves would fall.

Seeing this, people went to the priest of the temple. Understanding the pain of the princess, the priest said, “Daughter, you stay in my family, I will keep you like my daughter, you will not face any problem in my ashram. “She started living in the ashram like this, now whenever she cooked food or brought water, it would get infested with insects. Seeing this, the priest was surprised and said to her, Daughter, why is your condition such as this, why is there anger on you. He told the same story which was not told in Shiv Puja. That priest worshiped Lord Shiva and said that he would get relief by observing fast on sixteen Mondays.

She kept a fast for sixteen Mondays and on the sixteenth Monday the Brahmin son wondered where she would be and that he should search for her. He asked his son to find his wife. They went to the priest’s house and found the princess. They asked the priest to take the princess home, but the priest said that their king himself would come and take her. The king himself went there and brought the princess back to his palace. In this way, all the wishes of the person fasting on sixteen Mondays are fulfilled and he gets the desired result.
