On this day, the fierce form of Lord Shiva is worshiped. Kalbhairav is duly worshiped and fast is observed. It is believed that by doing this one gets the blessings of Kalbhairav and also increases the wealth.

According to Shivpuran, once Brahmadev became proud and he himself is the creator and supreme being of the universe. They started considering themselves superior to all other gods. When Brahmadev asked the Vedas about this, they described Shiva as the supreme element, but still Brahmadev started calling himself superior.
Mahadev took Kalabhairava incarnation
At the same time the Purushakriti appeared there with a bright light. Mahadev said to that male figure, ‘Because you are beautiful like Kaal, you are Kaalraj. Because of being fierce, he is Bhairav. Even time will be afraid of you, hence you are Kaalbhairav. After receiving so many boons from Lord Shiva, Kalbhairav cut off the fifth head of Brahma with his finger nail.
Kalbhairav was accused of the sin of Brahmahatya.
Due to cutting off the head of Brahmadev, Kalbhairav was accused of the sin of Brahmahatya, due to which Brahma’s head stuck to his hand. Mahadev asked Kalbhairav to go to Kashi to get rid of this sin. When Kalbhairav reached Kashi, Brahma’s head automatically separated from his hand. Lord Shiva appointed Kalbhairav as the Kotwal of Kashi.

According to Shivpuran, Mahadev took the incarnation of Kalbhairav on the Krishna Paksha Ashtami date of Aghan month, hence the festival of Kalbhairav Ashtami is celebrated every year on this date. Kalbhairav is worshiped in both Satvik and Tamasic forms, that is, meat and liquor are also offered to him. By their grace all kinds of troubles go away and no fear of any kind haunts us.
