What is a lunar eclipse?
A lunar eclipse occurs when Earth comes between the sun and the moon, casting a shadow on the moon’s surface. Depending on the alignment, the eclipse can partially or fully obscure the moon. During a partial lunar eclipse, only a portion of the moon is covered by Earth’s shadow, often giving it a reddish tint. During a partial lunar eclipse, Earth’s shadow grows and then retreats without fully covering the moon, according to NASA.
