According to mythology, once Yudhishthira asked about the name, deity and method of worship of Ekadashi of Shukla Paksha of Bhadrapada month. Then Krishna ji narrated a story to Yudhishthira, which Brahma ji had told to Mahatma Narada. Narada asked Brahma ji – For the worship of Vishnu ji, I want to know from you which Ekadashi of Shukla Paksha of Bhadrapada month occurs? Brahma ji said – You have asked me a great question. Ekadashi of Shukla Paksha of Bhado month is known as Padma. Lord Hrishikesh is worshipped on that day. In Suryavansh, there was a Chakravarti, truthful and glorious Rajarshi (who is both a king and a sage) named Mandhata. There was no famine in his kingdom. The people were not troubled by mental worries and there was no outbreak of diseases. His people were fearless and financially prosperous. Maharaj’s treasury had only the collection of honestly earned money. In his kingdom, people of all castes and ashrams were engaged in their respective religions. The land of Mandhata’s kingdom was as fruitful as Kamadhenu. During his reign, the life of the people was quite happy.
Once, due to the consequences of some karma, it did not rain for three years in the king’s kingdom. Due to which the people suffering from hunger started perishing. The people came to the king and said that you should listen to the people. Water is the abode of God. That is why he is called Narayan. Lord Vishnu in the form of Narayan is omnipresent. He himself takes the form of clouds and rains and food is produced and the people survive because of food. Maharaj, at this time the people are perishing without food, so please do something.
The king said that you are right, food is called Brahma. Food is the only thing that keeps a living being alive. It is also described in detail in the Puranas that the subjects suffer due to the atrocities of the kings, but when I think about it, I do not find any crime in it. Still, I will make every effort for the welfare of the people.
Having decided so, King Mandhata along with some people went towards the forest to pay obeisance to God. There he met sages and ascetics. One day he saw Brahma’s son Angira. On seeing him, the king folded his hands and bowed down to the sage’s feet. The sage also accepted the king’s greetings and asked about the kingdom. The king told about the condition of the subjects and asked about the sage’s health. The sage offered a seat and water to the king. When the sage asked the reason for the king’s visit, the king told that everything was going well in my kingdom, but due to some reasons there has been a lack of rain. I do not know the reason for this.
Sage Angira said that Satyayug is the best age. In this age, people are engaged in the contemplation of God. In this age, only Brahmins are ascetics, not others. In your kingdom, a Shudra is doing penance and due to this, there is no rain. You should perform a yagya in retaliation, so that this fault is pacified.
The king said, Munivar, he is engaged in penance and he has committed no crime. Therefore I will not create any obstacle in his penance. You should preach some religion which can calm the sins. Then the sage said that if this is the case, then observe Ekadashi fast. Ekadashi named Padma is observed in the Shukla Paksha of Bhadrapada month. The effect of this fast will definitely solve the problem and you can observe this fast with your subjects and family members. Hearing these words of the sage, the king returned home and observed Padma Ekadashi fast in the Shukla Paksha of Bhadon month along with the subjects of all four castes. Due to this fast, rain started in the kingdom and the earth started getting decorated with lush green crops.
Lord Krishna said that for this reason Yudhishthira should observe Padma i.e. Parivartini Ekadashi fast. By reading and listening to this fasting story, all the sins of a person are destroyed.
