Lord Parashurama is considered to be the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu and he is considered an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva. Lord Parshuram was born in Pradosh Kaal, the house of Mother Renuka and Rishi Jamadagni. He was the obedient son of his parents. Still he cut his mother’s neck. Let us know why Parashuram ji had to cut his mother’s neck and then what happened to him.
The life of Parashurama, considered the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu, is a wonderful example of renunciation, obedience and penance. According to a story, Parashurama killed his mother on the orders of his father, after which he had to do harsh penance. It is said that once Rishi Jamadagni’s wife Renuka Devi went to bathe in the lake. Incidentally, King Chitraratha was doing boating there. Seeing the king, Renuka Devi’s mind became distracted for a moment. When she returned to the ashram, Rishi Jamadagni realized her mood and became extremely angry.
Parashurama cut his mother’s neck
Enraged, the sage ordered his sons to kill the mother. But unfortunately no son was willing to do this work. Finally, when Jamadagni gave this command to Parashurama, he obeyed his father’s command without any hesitation and killed his mother. The other sons, who violated their father’s command, were cursed by Rishi Jamadagni to be discretionary. At the same time, pleased with the obedient Parashurama and asked to ask for a boon. Parashuram sought a boon to revive his mother. His wish was fulfilled and Renuka Devi got a new life.
Pleased with Parashurama’s sharp intellect and loyalty, Rishi Jamadagni also gave him knowledge of all the scriptures and weapons. However, due to the murder of his own mother, Parashurama felt the sin of ‘maternal murder’. To get rid of this sin, he did harsh penance to Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva was pleased with his penance, freed him from sin and gave him a divine weapon called ‘Parshu’. That is why he is called ‘Parashuram’. Therefore, even today Parashurama’s life is remembered as a symbol of obedience, penance and protecting religion.
