Paryushan festival is unique in the sense that instead of decorating houses and clothes, the soul is decorated. Instead of delicious food, fasting is the nourishment of life. The literal meaning of Paryushan is to worship the soul qualities, i.e. to stay close to the soul. In the Shvetambara tradition, intense meditation is done for eight days continuously and in the Digambara tradition, it is done for ten days.
Ashtangi Mahotsavs were prevalent in Indian culture. When the same Ashtangi Mahotsavs became adorned with spiritual wealth, they came to be known as Paryushan. In these eight days, the internal rigidity of eight karmas is reduced. An attempt is made to manifest the eight fundamental powers of the soul. These eight resolutions have special importance in the worship of Paryushan festival—
Khamemi Savve Jiva I offer forgiveness on my behalf to all living beings. I have no anger, discontent or resentment towards anyone.
I ask for forgiveness from all living beings in the form of ‘Savve Jiva Khamantu’. If I have hurt anyone in a known or unknown situation, then I consider myself guilty and ask for forgiveness from everyone.
I declare friendship towards all living beings of the universe. I have no other feeling in my mind except friendship.
My inner joy is calling out that there is no enmity, hostility, or hatred left in my heart towards any human being or creature.
Life is like a fire sacrifice. I am committed to kindle the flame of penance in it. I am looking for a way to conquer the mind by leaving behind even the necessities like food and am immersed in the bliss of self-realization.
Anugrahartham svasyati sargo daanam I am losing the urge for self-rights. Whatever I have is not mine alone, it belongs to everyone. On this Paryushan occasion, I am giving away all attachment to whatever was under my control for the benefit of all.
Tassa Bhante Padikkami, I have committed some character mistakes in the past year, in my past life, to rectify them, I accept the method of Pratikraman. These days I take a firm resolve to return from all the places where my steps have strayed. My past will not follow me again.
Pachkkhanenam asava darai nirumbai To make my future pure and clean, I take refuge in Pratyakhyan. I will not do any untoward work. I will not do untoward conduct. I will not say unspeakable statements.
Tirthankar Lord Mahavir Swami has ordered to celebrate this unique festival of Paryushan with these eight resolutions.
