Pay special attention to these things during Jitiya or Jivitputrika fast

Jivitputrika Vrat is observed with the auspicious wish for long life and healthy life of children. In this three-day fast, 24 hours of unbroken waterless fast is important. Women observing the fast do not consume anything during this period. Jivitputrika Vrat is observed every year on Ashtami Tithi of Krishna Paksha of Ashwin month. This fast begins with Nahai-Khaai on Saptami Tithi and ends with Parana on Navami Tithi. According to Mithila and Banaras Panchang, this year Jivitputrika (Jiutiya) Vrat is falling on different days. Those who follow Mithila Panchang will observe Jiutiya Vrat on 24th September, while those who follow Banaras Panchang will observe fast on 25th September. This fast is also associated with Mahabharata period. According to the story, when Ashvatthama killed all the sleeping sons of Pandavas and Abhimanyu’s unborn son, at that time Lord Krishna brought Arjun’s grandson to life in the womb itself. For this reason, this grandson of Arjun was named Jivitputrika and according to the belief, this is the reason why mothers observe this fast for the long life of their son. Jivitputrika Vrat Katha also mentions Siyarani and Chilli. Before starting the fast for Jivitputrika Vrat, something can be eaten and drunk in the morning before sunrise. Before sunrise, women can take water, sherbet and other fruits and sweet food items. This is called Shargahi.

Keep these things in mind-

There is also a tradition of eating noni saag before keeping this fast. It is said that noni saag contains calcium and iron in abundance. Due to which the body of the fasting person does not suffer from lack of nutrients.

After the completion of this fast, women wear a red thread of Jitiya around their neck. Women observing the fast also wear a locket of Jitiya.

Mustard oil and oil cake are offered during the puja. After the fast is over, this oil is applied on the head of children as a blessing.
