Lunar eclipse on September 18, no Sutak

Since the lunar eclipse is not visible in India, its sutak will not be effective. Son, grandson, nephew, niece, anyone can perform the shraddha. Those who do not have any male member in their family but have one in the daughter’s family, then the brother-in-law and son-in-law can also perform the shraddha.

When is the Pitru Paksha

Starting from the full moon of Bhadra Paksha, the Shraadh Paksha continues till the new moon of Ashwin month. The Shraadh of the full moon is performed for those who died on any full moon day of the year. However, the Shraadh of all known and unknown people is performed on the new moon day of Ashwin. According to the Udayatithi, the Tarpan of the full moon and Pratipada will be on 18th September.

How to perform Shradh

First take out the portion of crow, dog and cow, the symbols of Yama (put some portion of all the food items in it) then take milk, water, sesame and flowers in a vessel. Perform tarpan three times with kusha and black sesame. Keep reciting Om Pitrudevatabhyo Namah. You can take out and donate clothes etc. whatever you want for the ancestors.

Shraddha for three generations only

Shraddha is performed only for three generations. According to religious texts, when the Sun enters Virgo, ancestors return to their relatives from the other world. Ancestors of three generations are considered to be in a god-like state. Father is considered to be like Vasu, Rudra is like grandfather and great-grandfather is like Aditya. One reason behind this is that the memory power of a human being is limited to only three generations.

During the Shraadh Paksha, offerings are made using water and sesame seeds (devanna). Water is what accompanies us from birth to death (moksha). Sesame seeds are called devananna. This is what satisfies our ancestors.

Do this for peace of mind

●Recite one rosary of Om Pitra Devtabhayo Namah every day

● Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevay, keep chanting the Gayatri Mantra

If you don’t remember the date of death…

● Pratipada maternal grandparents

●Panchami who died unmarried.

●Of Navami Mata and other women.

● Ekadashi and Dwadashi father, grandfather

●There has been an untimely death on Chaturdashi.

●Amavasya for all known and unknown ancestors.

(Shraddha should be performed on the same day on which the death occurred. Otherwise, it should be performed on Pitru Amavasya.)

Why crow, dog and cow?

●They are considered to be the symbol of Yama. The cow is said to cross the Vaitarni. The crow is said to be a prophet and the dog is said to be an indicator of evil. Therefore, they are also given food during Shraddha. Since we do not know which form our ancestors went to after death, therefore food is symbolically offered to the cow, dog and crow.
