Pongal celebrated with religious enthusiasm and gaiety in Tamil Nadu

Chennai, Amrit Vichar: The traditional harvest festival Pongal was celebrated with religious fervor and gaiety in Tamil Nadu. This festival falls every year on the first day of the auspicious Tamil month ‘Thai’ and people start the festival with great enthusiasm by worshiping the Sun God.

People wore new clothes and prepared sweet Pongal, a traditional dish made of rice, pulses, jaggery and milk. Farmers offered the prepared food to the Sun God to give thanks for the bountiful weather.

Pongal was celebrated with great pomp in rural areas. People decorated their courtyards with colorful rangolis and celebrated. Prepared Pongal using traditional earthen pots.
