It is believed that by the grace of Mother Kalratri, the devotee always remains free from fear, he never fears fire, water, enemy, night etc.
The body of Goddess Kaalratri is black like the darkness of night. There is an electric garland around the neck and hair is scattered. Mother has four hands, Gandasa in one hand and Vajra in the other. Also, both the hands of the mother are in Varamudra and Abhaya Mudra respectively. His vehicle is Gardabha (Donkey).

Acharya Mishra explains, ‘When the demons Shumbha-Nishumbha and Raktabeej created havoc in the three worlds, all the gods became worried and went to Lord Shiva and prayed for his protection. Lord Shiva asked Mother Parvati to kill the demons and protect his devotees. Obeying Lord Shiva, Mother Parvati took the form of Durga and killed Shumbha-Nishumbha. When Mother Durga killed the demon Raktabeej, millions of Raktabeej demons were born from the blood that came out of her body. Seeing this, Durga created Kaalratri with her might. After this, when Mother Durga killed the demon Raktabeej and blood came out from his body, before the blood fell on the ground, Mother Kalratri filled it in her mouth. In this way Mother Durga killed Raktabeej by slitting everyone’s throat.
