The story and importance of Lord Vitthal

Lord Vitthal is considered an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, which is specially worshiped in Maharashtra. Vitthal’s name is made up of two words – ‘Vitt’ which means wealth and ‘Thal’ means place. It is said that Vitthal provides happiness, peace and prosperity to the devotees. The temple was established in the 13th century by great devotees like Sant Namdev and Sant Tukaram, who made Vitthal Bhakti popular in Maharashtra.

Annual Rath Yatra and Festival

The biggest feature of Lord Vitthal Temple is its annual Rath Yatra, which is celebrated with great pomp throughout Maharashtra. This festival is held on a special day of the month of Kartik, in which thousands of devotees draw the chariot of Lord Vitthal with great reverence and enthusiasm. This event is a lively proof of the faith of the devotees.

Apart from this, festivals like Gopalashtami, Ram Navami and Deepawali are celebrated with great enthusiasm here. Devotees participate in Bhajan-Kirtan and Satsang organized in the temple and get spiritual pleasure.

Devotees’ immense reverence

Lord Vitthal Temple is not just a place of worship for the people of Maharashtra, but the place of shelter in every crisis of life.
