New Delhi. The Supreme Court said on Friday that the Hare Krishna Temple located in Bangalore is from the ISKCON Society of the city. The apex court accepted ISKCON Bangalore’s plea, challenging the Karnataka High Court order that ruled in favor of ISKCON Mumbai regarding control of the prestigious Hare Krishna Temple and educational complex in Bengaluru. A bench of Justice AS Oka and Justice Augustine George Christ ruled.
ISKCON Bangalore moved the apex court on June 2, 2011, challenging the High Court verdict of May 23, 2011. ISKCON Bangalore challenged the High Court verdict in the petition in which the 2009 order of a local court in Bengaluru was overturned. ISKCON Bangalore was represented by its officer Kodandram Das.
The lower court had previously ruled in favor of ISKCON Bangalore, recognized its legal name and gave permanent prohibition against ISKCON Mumbai. However, the High Court overturned the decision and retained the ISKCON Mumbai claim, giving them control over the temple. In this legal battle, two societies with equal name and spiritual missions stood against each other.
ISKCON Bangalore, a society registered in Karnataka, claims that it has been working independently for decades and managing the temple of Bangalore. ISKCON Mumbai registered under the National Society Registration Act 1860 and Bombay Public Trust Act, 1950 claims that ISKCON Bangalore is only its branch and the related property is truly under the jurisdiction of his (Mumbai -based ISKCON).
