This unique temple was built by Campa Gowda in the 9th century. This temple was then renovated in the 16th century. The special thing of this temple is that the Shivling present here is self -proclaimed, that is, no one has made it. It is believed that this Shivling itself has appeared. It is believed that Gautama Rishi did penance in this temple to please Lord Shiva.
Every year on the occasion of Makar Sankranti, a wonderful event is seen in this temple. Actually, on this day the Sun God anoints this Shivling with his rays. Whereas in the rest of the year of the year, the rays of the sun do not reach this Shivling. Only on the day of Makar Sankranti throughout the year, when the Sun God is Uttarayan, the sun’s rays reach the sanctum sanctorum for only 5 to 8 minutes and anoint the Shivling. This view is usually seen at sunset. People from far and wide come to see this amazing view.
The architecture of this temple is very special. This temple is facing south-west direction i.e. south-west corner. Also, it has been made in such a way that only once a year the rays of the sun reach the Shivling. This shows that the architect who prepared the map of this temple was the knowledgeer of the constellation science.
