Mother Parvati did a lot of penance to get Lord Shiva as her husband.
According to the popular legend, Goddess Parvati performed a tough penance to get Lord Shiva as her husband. But at that time, Parvati’s friends kidnapped her. Harat means kidnapping and Aalika means kidnapping by friends and this is called Hartalika. This is the reason why this fast is called Hartalika. In some places, unmarried girls also observe this fast with devotion to get a husband like Lord Shiva.
