Kalashtami worship method
On this day, Kaal Bhairav is adorned with jasmine oil and vermilion. This form of Lord Shiva is also worshiped only after Pradosh Kaal i.e. after sunset. In Pradosh period, one should take a bath and wear clean clothes before worshiping. After this, write ‘Om’ with white sandalwood on the idol or Shivling of Kaal Bhairav and chant the mantra ‘Om Kaal Bhairavaya Namah’. Chanting the mantra, offer bell letters and during this time your face should be towards the north direction. Now you should make up Kaal Bhairav and offer them Akshat, flowers, betel nuts, janeu, red sandalwood, coconut, Dakshina and flower garland etc. Then offer Emrati or jaggery to God. Mustard oil lamp is lit in the worship of Kaal Bhairav. After worship, black dogs should be fed sweet bread.

According to the legend, one day there was a debate between Lord Vishnu and Lord Brahma on who is more powerful. The debate grew so much that Lord Shiva had to call a meeting of great scholars, sages and saints to find a solution and come to the conclusion. Lord Vishnu agreed after reaching the solution in the meeting, but Lord Brahma did not accept it. This made Lord Shiva angry, because it was an insult to him, and he took a devastating form. Thus a new avatar came into existence which was of Kaal Bhairav. In this avatar, he came riding on a black dog carrying a stick in one hand. That is why he was also named ‘Dandadhipati’. This terrible manner of Lord Shiva became frightened. Seeing this situation, Lord Brahma apologized in front of Lord Shiva’s Kaal Bhairav avatar.
