According to legend, Gorakhnath is considered to be an incarnation of Lord Shiva. He is considered the father of Bhakti movement. Gorakhnath attained Siddhi in Kotdwar, Uttarakhand, due to which he is called Siddhababa. According to Gorakh Purana, the name of Gorakhnath’s guru was Guru Machhendra Nath. Once, with the permission of Bajrangbali ji, he was living with Queen Mainakani of Triya kingdom.

When Gorakhnath got information about this, he set out to free Guru Mahendra Nath from Queen Mainakani. It is believed that in Siddhabali, Hanuman ji changed his form and blocked the path of Guru Gorakhnath. After this there was a war between the two. During this period both of them could not defeat anyone. After this Hanuman ji assumed his true form and asked for a boon from Guru Gorakhnath. In such a situation, Guru Gorakhnath requested Hanuman to stay at this place as his guard.

It is believed that Sikh Guru Guru Nanak Dev and a Muslim fakir also worshiped at this place. This is the reason why this temple is known all over the world by the name of Shri Siddhabali Temple.
