The sale of electric vehicles in the capital Lucknow has seen a tremendous rise in the last few years. According to the latest SIAM report and government data, the EV market in Lucknow is spreading rapidly and the city is becoming a major center of other e-vehicles including electric rickshaws.
Heavy bounce in sales
In 2020, only 56 electric rickshaws were sold in Lucknow, while in 2024 the number has increased to 3,572. This is an increase of about 6,000 percent. Electric rickshaws in Lucknow are making the biggest contribution to this increase. This boom is the result of not only increasing environmental awareness of consumers but also the subsidy and encourages provided by the government.
Improvement in charging infrastructure
With the increase in the number of electric vehicles in Lucknow, charging stations are also being rapidly increased. The state government has started the work of setting up 72 charging stations on five major expressways, of which many are also in Lucknow. Many of these charging stations are based on solar energy, which is a major step towards environmental protection.
Government schemes and subsidies
The Uttar Pradesh government has launched several beneficial schemes to promote electric vehicles. These include subsidy on procurement, road tax exemption and reduction in registration fee. A two-wheeler e-vehicle buyer is being given a subsidy of up to Rs 5,000, three-wheelers up to Rs 12,000 and four-wheeler electric cars up to Rs 1 lakh. This subsidy scheme is motivating people to buy EV.
Reason behind increasing demand
Increasing environmental anxiety and efforts to reduce pollution, rising prices of petrol and diesel, progress in EV technology and better battery capacity, expansion of charging facility, the promotion of the government and subsidy in Lucknow are constantly increasing demand for electric vehicles in Lucknow and this increase is likely to increase even more in the coming years. Lucknow may soon become a big hub of electric vehicles with better charging infrastructure, subsidy and increasing awareness. This step will not only benefit the environment but will also promote clean and green transport in the city.
