The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) said on Monday that 97.96 percent of the notes worth Rs 2000 have returned to the banks. Notes worth Rs 7,261 crore are still with the people. The RBI had announced the withdrawal of bank notes worth Rs 2000 from circulation on May 19, 2023.

The central bank said that the total value of Rs 2000 bank notes in circulation at that time was Rs 3.56 lakh crore at the close of business. This year, it came down to Rs 7,261 crore at the close of business on August 30. RBI said in the statement, “Thus, 97.96 percent of the Rs 2000 bank notes in circulation have returned to the banks as of May 19, 2023.

The facility to exchange bank notes of this value is available in 19 issue offices of the Reserve Bank from May 19, 2023. From October 9, 2023, RBI issue offices are also accepting Rs 2000 bank notes from individuals and institutions for depositing them in their bank accounts. Apart from this, people can send Rs 2000 notes from any post office in the country to any issue office of RBI to deposit the amount in their bank accounts.

The 19 RBI offices that accept deposit/exchange of banknotes are located at Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Belapur, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Jammu, Kanpur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, New Delhi, Patna and Thiruvananthapuram. Rs 2000 banknotes were introduced in November 2016 after demonetisation of Rs 1000 and Rs 500 banknotes.
