Ahmedabad, 5 July (IANS). Taking an important step in the field of green infrastructure, Adaani Port and Special Economic Zone Limited (APSEZ) said on Saturday that the APSEZ inaugurated the world’s first steel slag road at the port, which establishes a new global standard in circular economy-based growth.
The sustainable road spreading up to 1.1 km within the Hazira port in Surat connects the multi-pijas berth (MPB-1) to the coal yard. It is India’s third steel slag road, but is the first road built inside a private port globally, which leads India and APSED at the forefront of sustainable maritime infrastructure.
According to company officials, it uses processed steel slag aggregates (a by-product of steel manufacturing), showing how industrial waste can be converted into high-performance, deurable infrastructure.
The project was developed as part of the second phase of the second phase of bulk and General Cargo Terminal (BGCT) expansion in collaboration with the Council of Setric and Industrial Research- Central Road Research Institute (CSIR-CRRI) and Union Ministry of Science and Technology.
The flexible pavement of the road prepared by CSIR-CRRI increases the load capacity and strength, reducing the construction cost and environmental impact.
The initiative is associated with the West to Wealth Mission and confirms APSEZ’s commitment to environmental conscious port development.
The formal inauguration of this road, Vijay Kumar Saraswat, Member (Science and Technology), NITI Aayog at Hazira Port, CSIR Director General and DSIR Secretary N.K. Kaliselvi and CSIR-CRRI Director and Indian Rhodes Congress President entertained Parida.
According to the company’s statement, senior head scientist and inventor of Steel Slag Road Technology Satish Pandey, Adani Hazira Port Limited COO Anand Marathe and other dignitaries and scientists were also present on the occasion.
The company said, “With this initiative, APSED will continue to lead the change of India’s logistics sector by combining the innovation, industrial ecology and strength of infrastructure in the service of national development.”
