Audit and consulting company Deloitte has formed a committee to look into employee behavior, policies and processes. The company has taken this step amid the ongoing controversy on social media after the death of a young employee at tax advisory firm EY due to excessive work pressure. Deloitte CEO (South Asia) Romal Shetty gave this information on Friday. This committee includes former revenue secretary Tarun Bajaj, former CBI director Subodh Jaiswal and former Airtel chief Manoj Kohli.

Deloitte is one of the top 4 global tax consulting companies

Shetty said that Deloitte has a Chief Wellbeing Officer to handle work pressure and maintain an open work culture. Apart from this, there is also a provision for strict action on any kind of bad behavior in the company. Let us tell you that Deloitte is among the 4 major global tax consulting companies of the world. Apart from EY, these top companies include PWC and KPMG. The mother of an employee working in EY has alleged that her daughter died due to excessive work pressure. After this matter gained momentum, the government has also started an investigation.

Ana Sebastian died in July

Shetty said, “The death of this child is very unfortunate and very sad. We are in the business of providing services to customers and in the customer service business there is always a deadline. There are all kinds of pressures in it.” Anna Sebastian Perayil, who passed the Chartered Accountant (CA) exam in 2023, worked in EY’s Pune office for 4 months this year and died in July. According to a letter written by Anna’s mother to EY India Chairman Rajiv Memani, as a new employee, Anna had a ‘very high’ workload, which affected her ‘physically, emotionally and mentally’.

We need an open culture as an organization

While Shetty said that there is no culture of harassment in 100-150 year old organisations, he also said that violations at the individual level cannot be ruled out. He said, “The culture of harassment does not usually exist in professional companies. But are there individuals who do certain things? Yes, absolutely. So first of all, I think as an organisation, you need to have an open culture, so that no one is afraid to bring those issues to the fore.”
