Meanwhile, on Monday, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) released a big update regarding 2000 rupee notes. According to RBI, 97 percent of the 2000 rupee notes that were taken out of circulation have been returned so far. But about three percent of the notes are still present with the people.
97.96% notes returned
The Reserve Bank of India released data on the return of Rs 2000 notes on Monday. In which the central bank said that 97.96 percent of Rs 2000 notes have returned to the banks, but pink notes worth Rs 7,261 crore are still present in the market. Let us tell you that after the order to withdraw the Rs 2000 note from circulation, in the initial phase, people deposited Rs 2000 notes in banks in large numbers. But gradually their pace decreased.
So many notes came back in July-August
According to the data released by RBI on July 1 this year, 2000 rupee notes worth Rs 7581 crore were present in the market. Which could not come below 7000 crores in two months. In July and August, people have deposited only 320 crores worth of notes back in the banks. When these notes were banned in May last year, a total of 3.56 lakh crores worth of notes were available in the market. By 29 December 2023, this figure had come down to Rs 9,330 crore.
2000 rupee notes were discontinued on 19 May 2023
Let us tell you that under the Clean Note Policy, the Reserve Bank had announced the withdrawal of the highest value Rs 2000 note in circulation in the country on 19 May 2023. After this, the central bank had asked to deposit these notes in 19 regional offices of RBI besides all the local banks. The deadline for which was kept from 23 May to 30 September 2023. But even after this, RBI extended the deadline several times.
How can you deposit 2000 rupee notes now?
If you still have two thousand rupee notes, you can still exchange them. But for this you will have to go to the RBI branch. There are only 19 of them in the country. These 19 branches of RBI are located in Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Belapur, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Jammu, Kanpur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, New Delhi, Patna and Thiruvananthapuram.
