New Delhi, November 11 (IANS). Union Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia said on Monday that at least 20 percent of the Indian economy will be digital by 2026-27, which is currently 10 percent.
This shows that the government is committed to expanding broadband access, enhancing the regulatory framework and promoting the digital ecosystem.
Inaugurating the South Asian Telecom Regulatory Council (SATRC-25) in the national capital, Scindia said India is emerging as a digital titan with 1.2 billion telephone and 97 crore internet subscribers. Due to this, digital economy is emerging rapidly in the country, which currently constitutes 10 percent of the entire economic scenario. It was 3.5 percent a decade ago.
He said that our digital economy is growing 2.8 times faster than the national economy. For this reason, we estimate that by 2026-27, the share of digital economy will reach 20 percent in the country’s economy.
Scindia further said that South Asia must be united in its efforts to build a connected, strong and sustainable future.
India is emerging as the voice of the Global South and SATRC-25 will serve as an excellent platform for knowledge sharing and confluence of innovative perspectives on emerging policy and regulatory challenges.
SATRC’s member countries are Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Iran, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
The Union Minister pointed out that South Asia plays an important role in global ICT development and stressed the need for regulations that drive innovation while ensuring inclusivity.
The advent of non-terrestrial networks (NTNs) will facilitate the expansion of telecommunication coverage to the most remote corners of member states.
