New Delhi, 8 July (IANS). Former DG of International Solar Alliance and Professor Ajay Mathur at IIT Delhi said that it is necessary to expand the battery storage capacity with solar energy ability.
Talking to news agency IANS, Ajay Mathur said that solar energy capacity is increasing rapidly in the country. Solar energy is produced during the day, but it is used more at night. For this reason it is also necessary to increase battery storage capacity.
He further said that the price of solar, wind and storage in the auction in the last one year has been less than Rs 5 per unit, while the price of electricity generated from new coal plants during this period has been more than Rs 5.
For this reason we should now focus on solar, wind and storage to move forward.
Mathur further said that by 2030, India will comfortably cross the target of renewable energy of 500 GW.
According to data from the Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), India’s total renewable energy installed capacity recorded an increase of 15.84 percent by December 2024, which has now increased from 180.80 GW to 209.44 GW in December 2023.
During this period, the solar energy sector led this growth with an increase of 24.54 gigawatts, which shows an increase of 33.47 percent in its cumulative installed capacity, which has increased from 73.32 ggawatt in 2023 to 97.86 GW in 2024.
In the last few years, India has emerged as one of the world’s leaders in Energy Transition and has set a target of adding 500 GW Renuable Energy Capacity by 2030, in which solar energy will play a major role in achieving this target.
Rajasthan, Gujarat and Karnataka have emerged as a leading state in solar capacity growth, while the top 10 states have 94 percent of the total installation.
