New Delhi, 25 June (IANS). The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved Chandni Chowk (Corridor 2A) and Ramwadi to Vagholi/Vitthalwadi (Corridor 2B) of the second phase of the Pune Metro Rail Project. It is an extension of the existing Vanaz-Ramwadi corridor under Phase-1.
This strategic expansion will highlight the economic capacity of Pune and will increase the urban transport infrastructure. Also, in the metropolitan region, it will contribute significantly to sustainable and increases development.
These two elevated corridors will be spread up to 12.75 kilometers and will include 13 stations, which will add fast -growing suburbs such as Chandni Chowk, Bawdhan, Kothaud, Kharadi and Wagholi. The target has been set to complete this project in four years.
Under long-term mobility planning, intercity bus services from cities like Mumbai and Bangalore will be integrated into Chandni Chowk, while Ahilya Nagar and Chhatrapati will be connected to Sambhaji Nagar, Vagholi. These expansion will also help in reducing congestion on main routes like Paud Road and Nagar Road, which will provide safe, fast and environmentally friendly mobility options.
These expansion will provide services to major IT hubs, commercial areas, educational institutions and residential areas, which will increase public transport and number of passengers throughout the network. The new corridor will integrate the District Court Interchange Station with Line-1 (Nigdi-Katraj) and Line-3 (Hinjwadi-District Court).
After the completion of these corridors, the estimated daily aged passengers for the entire line 2 are estimated to be 0.96 lakh in 2027, 2.01 lakh in 2037, 2.87 lakh in 2047 and 3.49 lakhs in 2057.
The project will be implemented by Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha-Metro), which will execute all civil, electro-mechanical and related tasks.
