New Delhi, 21 March (IANS). To increase the green steel manufacturing in the country, the Steel Ministry has provided two pilot projects, using 100 percent hydrogen in the vertical shaft, producing direct redicated iron (DRI) and using hydrogen in the current blast furnace to cut coal consumption and carbon footprints in a pilot project. This information was given by the government on Friday.
Minister of State for Steel Bhupatiraju Srinivas Verma told the Rajya Sabha in a written reply to a question that under the National Green Hydrogen Mission launched by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, the Steel Ministry has been allocated Rs 455 crore by FY 2029-30 to the Steel Ministry for the implementation of Green Hydrogen in the steel industry.
The Union Minister said that Central Public Sector Enterprises under the Steel Ministry also BHP from Australia, SMS from Germany, Printal Technologies from Germany, John Cockriel India Limited from Belgium, Ram Charan Company Private Limited, Chennai’s Ram Charan Company Private Limited, IIT, Bombay’s Center for Bombay Captain and Green Eastern in Bombay Captain Center and Uses to Use, Corporation Limited is partnership with reputed technology providers.
In response to another question, the minister said that India and Japan discussed the major areas of cooperation in the steel sector, focusing on economic trends, development of industry and global challenges affecting both countries.
The conversation also discussed the current status of the steel industry in India and Japan, India’s quality control orders, the impact of more production being done by some countries and cooperation on capacity building programs.
The Union Minister said that there is already a memorandum of cooperation between the Indian Steel Ministry and the Economy, Ministry of Trade and Industry (METI) of Japan to promote cooperation in the steel industry between the two countries. However, due to the regulation free of the steel sector, steel companies take investments on the basis of commercial interest without government participation.
