Central government issued 1,298 blocking orders related to online betting, gaming

'ASCI' and online gaming industry joined hands to curb advertisements related to illegal betting

New Delhi, March 20 (IANS). In order to curb the risks and damage caused by online gaming, the central government has issued 1,298 blocking instructions related to online betting/gambling/gaming websites (including mobile application) between 2022-24.

According to Rail and Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnav, government policies aim to ensure an open, safe, reliable and accountable internet for internet users.

To achieve this goal, the government notified the amendments in information technology (arbitration guidelines and digital media code of conduct) Rules, 2021 to remove various socio-economic concerns arising from the online game after consultation with the concerned stakeholders.

The IT rules, 2021, puts special obligations on online gaming intermediaries including other intermediaries, social media intermediaries or platforms regarding the online game.

The Union Minister told the Lok Sabha that such intermediaries should not host, store or publish any information that violates any law.

According to the Union Minister, he is also obliged to ensure his accountability, including his immediate action towards removing illegal information classified under IT Rules, 2021.

Apart from this, immediate action will be taken against any information related to harmful, money laundering or gambling for children.

The IT Act consists of provisions to issue orders to the Middle Electrics to prevent sovereignty and unity, defense of India, friendship of state, friendly relations with foreign states or specific information/link in the interest of public system.

The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) under the Ministry of Home Affairs also publishes statistical data on crime in its publication “crime in India”.
