The government has extended Urad’s duty -free imports to another year to 31 March 2026. The Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Commerce Department has issued a notification regarding this decision. According to this, the provision of duty -free import was first applicable till the end of March this year. Let me tell you, Myanmar is the main exporting country of Urad to India. According to PTI news, the Directorate General of External Affairs (DGFT) has said in a notification that Urad’s free import policy has been extended to 31 March 2026. This step will help stabilize commodity prices in domestic markets.
Three months extended for yellow peas
In addition to urad, the duty free import policy for yellow peas has now been increased from February 28, 2025 to 31 May, 2025 so that traders can import yellow peas independently under updated conditions.
How much has been imported
According to the news, imports during April-November this financial year stood at US $ 601. 12 million. Of this value, grain of US $ 549 million was imported from Myanmar. Imports stared at US $ 663.24 in 2023-24 (US $ 646. 6 million from Myanmar). Apart from Myanmar, India imports Urad from Singapore, Thailand and Brazil. Last year, bilateral trade between India and Myanmar was US $ 1.74 billion.
India is the world’s largest urad producer
In the last financial year, bilateral trade between India and Myanmar was US $ 1.74 billion. It was US $ 1.76 billion in 2022–23. The trade deficit is in favor of Myanmar. The major producing states of Urad are Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra. India is the largest urad producer and consumer in the world.
The government’s decision to carry forward the import policy for Urad will help in ensuring stability in prices and adequate supply in the domestic market. Pulses are an important part of India’s food security. The government often adjusts import policies to balance demand and supply.
