India and China on Thursday discussed ways to strengthen cooperation in the civil aviation sector, including resumption of direct flights between the two countries. Civil Aviation Minister K Ramamohan Naidu, Civil Aviation Secretary Vumlunmuang Vulnam and other senior officials met Chinese representatives on the sidelines of the Asia Pacific Ministerial Conference on Civil Aviation in the national capital, PTI reported.

Talks held to promote early restoration

In a post on social media platform X, Naidu said he held a courtesy meeting with a Chinese delegation led by Song Zhiyong along with senior officials. The meeting focused on exchange of views on further strengthening civil aviation cooperation between the two countries, particularly on promoting the earliest resumption of scheduled passenger flights between us.

Talks were held but no decision was taken

The minister later told reporters that the Chinese side mentioned about resuming direct flights, but no decision has been taken. The decision will be taken after discussions with the Ministry of External Affairs and other stakeholders. Currently, there are no direct flights between India and China. These services were stopped during the coronavirus pandemic. IndiGo and Air India had flight services to China.

Service has been suspended since the time of the Covid-19 pandemic

Direct passenger flight connectivity between India and China was suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Given that bilateral relations deteriorated after the standoff in eastern Ladakh in 2020 and are still cold, direct flights between the two most populous countries have not resumed even though air connectivity at the global level has returned to pre-pandemic levels.
