New Delhi, January 12 (IANS). An important meeting on trade and cooperation between India and Nepal was held in Kathmandu. In this, measures to deal with unauthorized trade between the two countries were discussed. Also in this meeting, emphasis was laid on further strengthening bilateral trade and economic relations.
India remains Nepal’s largest trade and investment partner. India plays an important role in both imports and exports of Nepal. In this meeting, in-depth discussions were held about trade, investment and cross border trade. Also, in this meeting, measures to improve the trade relations between the two countries were considered.
According to the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, in this meeting held on January 10-11, both sides reviewed mutual market access, intellectual property rights (IPR) and tariff related issues. Apart from this, major issues like improvement of transport treaty and trade treaty, harmonization of standards and electrification of Raxaul-Birganj railway line were also discussed.
The Indian delegation informed that 2 lakh metric tonnes of wheat will be supplied on Nepal’s request. Furthermore, the Nepalese side expressed gratitude to the Indian Government for its continued support, especially for helping supply essential commodities.
In the meeting, the Indian side also discussed the problems faced in milk export to Nepal. The Nepalese delegation requested the Indian side to give positive consideration to milk products like whey and cheese, to which the Indian side agreed.
Additionally, plans to create new integrated check posts and railway links were also discussed in the meeting, which will strengthen seamless cross-border connectivity between India and Nepal.
