New Delhi, 3 June (IANS). Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Tuesday asked the Revenue Intelligence Directorate (DRI) to adopt a technology-driving approach to deal with the trafficking network and drug trade amidst rapidly complex gearful environment and safety threats.
Inaugurating the new Headquarters of DRI, the Finance Minister said that there is a need to bring deep systemic threats to the surface -level enforcement.
He said that demolishing the entire smuggling network should be the ultimate goal of any investigation, which should not be limited only to upper seizure.
The Finance Minister said, “It is not good if you catch small fish. It is not good. It will have to track the big smuggling chain and take action on it. We have to eliminate those nefarious chains.”
Sitharaman described drug addicts as the most serious national threat and called for immediate coordination with the state law enforcement agencies to prevent schools and colleges from being targeted by drug smugglers.
The Finance Minister described Prime Minister Modi’s ‘Reform, Perform and Transform’ mantra with the emotion with which enforcement agencies move forward.
He highlighted the need for intensive and sharp integration of modern technology in the enforcement structure.
He insisted on data-managed, intelligence-operated action, saying, “There are a lot of things about AI, but now I want to see concrete results using AI.”
The Finance Minister explained the three guide principles for the enforcement agencies, which includes implementing the rules fairly, maintaining public confidence in the business system and making enforcement with high impact.
“The use of data analytics and other similar things need to be integrated into the system deeply and well,” he said, “he said.
