Last week, the Government of India approved Foxconn with HCL Group to construct a semiconductor plant near Noida International Airport as part of a joint venture of Rs 3,700 crore.
This plant will produce display driver chips for mobile phones, laptops, automobiles, PCs and other displays equipped with other displays. It is designed to handle 20,000 wafers every month, which has an output capacity of 36 million units per month.
According to an official statement, “Already five semiconductor units are in the advance stage of construction. With this sixth unit, India will move forward in its journey to develop strategically important semiconductor industry.”
India’s semiconductor landscape is taking shape rapidly. Cutting-edge design infrastructure has been installed in many states, state governments are actively encouraged to operate design firms.
At the academic and startup levels, 270 institutions and 70 startups are developing advance design technology with the aim of creating students and innovator next generation semiconductor products.
At the same time, supporting infrastructure is also expanding. Prominent global companies such as major equipment manufacturers Applied Materials and Lam Research have established operations in India. Chemicals and gas suppliers such as Merc, Linde, Air Liquid and Iinox are also preparing to work extensively to meet the needs of the growing domestic semiconductor sector.
Manufacturing growth in areas such as mobile, laptop, server, medical equipment, defense system and consumer electronics is expected to contribute to the central government’s approach to the central government’s ‘self -sufficient India’.
