From May 1, every state of the country will have only one regional rural bank (RRB). In fact, the Finance Ministry has issued a notification for merger of 15 regional rural banks in 11 states to achieve better operational operations and cost rationalization. According to PTI news, after this merger, the number of regional rural banks (RRBs) in the country will be reduced to 28.
Banks will be merged in these states
According to the Gazetted notification, the regional rural banks in 11 states- Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Bihar, Gujarat, Jammu and Kashmir, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Odisha and Rajasthan are to be merged into a unit respectively, so that each of these can realize the target of every ‘one state-one RRB’. According to the Gazette notification of April 5, 2026, the effective date of merger has been fixed on 1 May.
Will be merged with a unit in the interest of banks
According to the notification, according to the powers given under Section 23A (1) of the Regional Rural Banks Act, 1976, these regional rural banks will merge in public interest and in a unit in the interest of the development of the sector to be served by these institutions and also in the interest of regional rural banks. Such as Union Bank of India, Canara Bank, Indian Bank and State Bank of India, Chaitanya Godavari Gramin Bank, Andhra Pragati Gramin Bank, Saptagiri Gramin Bank and Andhra Pradesh Rural Development Bank, including a single regional rural bank, were called Andhra Pradesh Gramin Bank.
This change will be done in Uttar Pradesh
According to the notification, a regional rural bank has been formed by merging 3 RRBs in Uttar Pradesh. Currently, Baroda U.P. sponsored by Bank of Baroda. Bank, Bank of India sponsored by Aryavarta Bank and Punjab National Bank Sponsored Prathama U.P. Grameen Bank has been merged with a new name- Uttar Pradesh Gramin Bank. The new RRB will be the sponsor of Uttar Pradesh Gramin Bank Bank of Baroda and the headquarters of Uttar Pradesh Gramin Bank will be in Lucknow.
