New Delhi, 6 March (IANS). To promote the domestic semiconductor industry, India Semiconductor Mission (ISM), Tata Electronics Private Limited (TEPL) and Tata Semiconductor Manufacturing Private Limited (TSMPL) have signed the country’s first commercial chip factory to build the country’s first business chip factory in Dholera, Gujarat.
The agreement, signed in the presence of Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel at the ‘SemiCent Conference’ in Gandhinagar, is a major step towards strengthening India’s technical self -reliance under the revised program for semiconductor and display manufacturing ecosystem in India.
Dholera has a total investment of more than Rs 91,000 crore in Tata Electronics Semiconductor Fab, which has a capacity of 50,000 wafers start per month (WSPM).
Through the ‘Bharat Semiconductor Mission’, the government has promised “50 percent financial assistance” for eligible project costs – which reflects the country’s commitment to the creation of world class semiconductor ecosystem within Indian borders.
Ready to create more than 20,000 direct and indirect skilled jobs, the project brings out the expertise of Taiwan’s Powerchip Semacist Manufacturing Corporation (PSMC) to India, which creates a strong technical coalition.
According to the government, this facility will address important global semiconductor markets in automotive, computing, communication and artificial intelligence sectors, which will convert India from a technology consumer to a global manufacturing power house.
Sushil Pal, CEO of the India Semiconductor Mission, emphasized that “the government is committed to giving timely financial assistance to pursue this project.”
“We are confident that Tata Electronics will play an important role in strengthening the electronics value chain and will contribute significantly to India’s goals in the field,” he said.
According to Dr. Randhir Thakur, CEO and MD, Tata Electronics, it is a historic milestone for India and Tata Electronics to set up a semiconductor manufacturing industry in the country.
Thakur said, “The Fiscal Support Agreement (FSA) strengthens our partnership with MTE and ISM to realize Prime Minister Modi’s dream of building chips for developed India.”
