Dairy Sector
The Union Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying on Tuesday announced major measures to develop affordable indigenous technologies for the dairy sector. The announcement was made to mark the completion of 100 days of the Modi government’s third term. Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh spoke about the major achievements and future plans during a press conference along with Ministers of State SP Singh Baghel and George Kurien. “We have developed affordable indigenous sex sorting technology, media for IVF and an integrated genomic chip for bovine animals,” Singh told reporters.
‘Cow Chip’ for Cattle
The minister said the government has a strong focus on reducing import dependence by promoting domestic solutions. A highlight of the announcements is the development of special integrated genomic ‘Gau Chip’ for cattle and ‘Mahish Chip’ for buffaloes, along with genotyping services. “The prime minister may launch it on National Milk Day,” Singh said. The technology, designed for Indian breeds, is aimed at accelerating genetic improvement programmes. As a key measure to reduce costs, the indigenous sex-sorted semen production technology is now operational.
prices will decrease
“We plan to produce 10 lakh sexed semen doses annually, each dose will cost Rs 200 instead of Rs 1,000 earlier,” the minister announced. Addressing sectoral challenges, Singh mentioned plans to identify states to organise the unorganised milk sector and efforts to tackle fodder shortage. Asked about the low budget allocation for the ministry, he said, “We are not facing any problem due to low budget. We are getting funds for our projects.” There was also growth in the fisheries sector, with the ministry announcing distribution of one lakh free swadeshi transponders to fishermen. “These will be linked to Android mobile phones,” Singh said. The government has also approved three smart fish harbours and five aqua parks.
