Government denied reports of closure of passive public dhan accounts

New Delhi, 8 July (IANS). The Department of Financial Services (DFS) and the Finance Ministry on Tuesday denied reports of closure of inactive PM Jan Dhan Yojana accounts.

The Financial Services Department issued a statement saying, “It has not asked banks to close the inactive Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana accounts.”

Some media reports claimed that the government has directed to discontinue the accounts under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY), in which no transactions have been done in the last 24 months.

It was told in the reports that this step is being done by the government to prevent misuse of these accounts.

Apart from this, the government informed that a three -month campaign has been launched by DFS to adopt Jan Dhan Yojana, Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana and Atal Pension Yojana across the country from July 1. Banks will also re -KYC of all the dues during this campaign.

The statement further stated that the Financial Services Department continuously monitor the number of passive PMJDY accounts and banks have been advised to contact the respective account holders to bring their accounts into operation. The trend of continuous increase in the total number of PMJDY accounts has been observed and no incident has come to the notice of the large -scale closure of passive PMJDY accounts.

The government launched the scheme on 28 August 2014. Through Jan Dhan Yojana, the government has managed to connect the poor, deprived sections of the country with the banking system. Along with this, the benefit of social security schemes is also being directly transported through direct bank transfer i.e. DBT.

According to the PMJDY website, the scheme has 55.69 crore beneficiaries so far and a total of Rs 2,59,622.39 crore is deposited in their accounts.
