The target of purchasing 3.1 million tonnes of wheat for the 2025-26 Rabi marketing session starting from April has been set. The government gave information about this on Friday. The ministry has targeted 11.5 million tonnes of record wheat production in the crop year 2024-25 (July-June), yet the purchase target is low. According to the language news, the official statement said that in a meeting with the food secretaries of the state on Friday, the purchase target was set for rabi crops like wheat, paddy and coarse grains. After deliberations, the target of procurement of wheat for the upcoming 2025-26 marketing session was set 3.1 million tonnes, rice 70 lakh tonnes and coarse grains 16 lakh tonnes.
Minimum support price of wheat
According to the news, the states were asked to take active steps to maximize the purchase of wheat and rice in the upcoming marketing session. States were also asked to focus on the purchase of coarse grains to encourage crops in diversification of crops and to increase nutrition in diet. The minimum support price of wheat for the 2025-26 Rabi marketing session starting from April has been fixed at Rs 2,425 per quintal.
Who shopping
The Food Corporation of India (FCI) and the state agencies procure wheat to ensure that farmers get minimum support price and the needs of welfare schemes are met. In the session 2024-25, government wheat procurement reached 2.66 million tonnes against the target of three to 3.2 million tonnes. Although it is more than 2.62 million tonnes purchased in 2023-24, it is less than the target of 3.41 million tonnes of that year.
The meeting discussed the public distribution system and several other initiatives related to public nutrition centers. The meeting was attended by food secretaries of various states and union territories, FCI, Storage Development and Regulatory Authority (WDRA), Indian Meteorological Department and Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Department.
