Government's first monthly data series estimated to be 5.1 percent in April

New Delhi, 15 May (IANS). The central government said on Thursday that the labor force participation rate (LFPR) was 55.6 percent during April during April. For individuals of the same age group, LFPR was 58 percent for rural areas and 50.7 percent in urban areas.

LFPR is an important indicator, which reflects employment status. This rate suggests how many people are actively participating in the labor force.

According to the new series based on the monthly data released by the Ministry of Statistics, data also includes rural employment figures, which make coverage wide.

In April, the unemployment rate (UR) in CWS among persons aged 15 and above was 5.1 percent, domestically the male UR was 5.2 percent, while the female UR was 5.0 percent.

The unemployment rate (UR) in urban areas was 6.4 percent during the October-December 2024 of the old series compiled on a quarterly basis. The LFPR in the CWS for men aged 15 years and above in rural and urban areas was 79 percent and 75.3 percent respectively, while in rural areas, LFPR between women aged 15 and above was 38.2 percent during April.

Labor population ratio (WPR) in CWS between persons aged 15 and above in rural areas was 55.4 percent.

According to the data, WPR was 47.4 percent in urban areas among the same age groups during April, while the overall WPR at the national level was 52.8 percent.

In rural and urban areas, women aged 15 years and above were 36.8 percent and 23.5 percent respectively during WPR month and the overall female WPR of the same age group was seen at 32.5 percent at the country level.

Considering the need for the creation of high frequency labor force indicators with increased coverage, the sample method of periodic labor force survey (PLFS) has been renewed from January 2025.

The renovated PLFS design has been conceived to estimate major employment and unemployment indicators (labor force partnership rates, labor population ratio and unemployment rate) on a monthly basis for rural and urban areas at the All India level.

Monthly results are planned to release PLFS as a monthly bulletin. The current monthly bulletin is the first in the series for April 2025 months.

A rotational panel sampling design has been adopted from January 2025 at PLFS for both rural and urban areas. In this rotational panel plan, each selected house is visited four times in four consecutive months.
