Peak power demand in summer of 2025 is expected to reach 277 GW.
Indians have spent 147.48 billion units (BU) in April last month. Electricity consumption across the country has increased slightly by 2.2 percent. This consumption was 144.28 BU in this month last year. According to PTI news, the highest supply (peak power demand completed) in a day also increased to 235.19 gW, which was 224.05 GW last month. In May 2024, the Peak Power Demand touched the all -time high level of around 250 GW. Earlier, the previous all -time high peak power demand was recorded in 243.27 GW of September 2023.
Peak power demand estimates in summer
According to the news, according to government estimates, peak power demand is expected to reach 277 GW in summer 2025. Experts say that electricity demand and consumption is expected to increase in May, which is expected to be more hot than normal. According to the Meteorological Department, India is expected to have higher temperatures from April to June, as well as more heatstroke in central and eastern India and northwest plains.

The Meteorological Department (IMD) has said that except for some places in the north-west and north-east, the minimum temperature in most parts of the country will be higher than normal, where the temperature may be normal or slightly lower than normal. Compared to last year, heat will come long ago in 2025. In 2024, India reported its first heat in Odisha on 5 April, but in some parts of Konkan and coastal Karnataka, the heat was experienced in early 27–28 February this year.
Possibility of increase in electricity demand by 9 to 10 percent
According to experts, India should be prepared to increase the demand for 9 to 10 percent of electricity in this summer season as the number of heat in the country is expected to be more. According to IMD, 72 heat were recorded in the country in April. In Rajasthan and Gujarat, more than normal wave days (6 to 11 days) and in eastern Madhya Pradesh and Vidarbha were recorded (4 to 6 days), while it is usually two to three days.
