Kottayam, 23 February (IANS). Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, while highlighting the position of the country in India’s rapid pace of innovation and adopting Artificial Intelligence (AI), said that India has been ahead of China and America in AI downloads.
The Finance Minister, in his address at the convocation of IIIT Kottayam, mentioned the statement of Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella in which he described India as ‘the capital of the use of AI’.
The Union Minister said that this is a “very big statement” because it means that we are not just talking about AI or not just doing research in AI, but we are applying it on a large scale.
Regarding India to adopt AI fast, the Finance Minister said that in 2024, 3 billion apps related to AI were downloaded in the country. This figure is high in the US 1.5 billion and China’s 1.3 billion higher.
The Finance Minister further said that we are not only a pioneer in adopting Artificial Intelligence (AI) but we are also shaping how to control AI.
He said that at the recent AI Action Summit in Paris (which India co-chairmanship with France) Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that AI is not just a national issue but a global responsibility. We need an AI that is moral, inclusive and reliable. “
He further stated that India’s rank in the Global Innovation Index has increased from 81st position in 2015 to 39th position in 2024.
Apart from this, the Finance Minister said that India’s patent-to-GDP ratio has increased from 144 in 2013 to 381 in 2023. This shows that the number of patents in the country has increased significantly in the last ten years.
