President Trump and PM Modi
US President Donald Trump has announced a counter border start on several countries including India from 2 April. If Trump pays a fee tomorrow, what will be the attitude of India? Research Institute Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI) said on Tuesday that India should strongly assess every demand of the US from the perspective of its national priorities, growth goals and cultural values amidst the constant pressure from the US to amend trade policies. Significantly, recently American and Indian representatives met to do trade deal but could not be completed.
American trade policy threatens India
Commenting on the National Trade Estimate (NTE) report-2025 of the US Trade Representative (USTR), GTRI said that many changes proposed in areas such as agriculture, digital compliance and public health create serious risk to protect their small farmers, maintain food security, maintain deep roots, maintain social norms and secure their digital future. The USTR report highlights many trade and regulatory challenges between the US and India, including issues related to fees, non-fee barriers, intellectual property, services, digital trade and transparency.
Many things will not be accepted by India
GTRI founder Ajay Srivastava said, “Most of the issues have been repeated by earlier reports. Some have been resolved and they are no longer relevant.” On India’s dairy import sanctions, he said that the US considers it ‘very strict, but imagine eating butter made from a cow’s milk, which has been fed to another cow’s meat and blood. India may never allow it. In India’s dairy import restrictions, the condition of other animal meat, blood, and not feeding internal organs, blocks access to the American dairy. He also said that India’s digital trade policies are particularly controversial for the US. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has made the localization of data mandatory, under which foreign payment service providers will have to store the details of Indians domestically.
