India will show the achievements of its power sector in the meeting of BRICS Energy Ministers

New Delhi, 17 May (IANS). India will show the achievements of its power and energy sector in the upcoming meeting of BRICS Energy Ministers. The meeting will be held in Brazil on 19 May. The Ministry of Energy made this statement on Saturday.

Union Electricity and Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal will represent India at this high level meeting.

The theme of this meeting is ‘Empowering Global South Corporation for Inclusive and Sustainable Global Governance’.

“This platform will bring energy ministers of BRICS countries – Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa together to discuss major issues like energy security, ability and stability,” the ministry said.

India plans to use this platform to showcase its achievements of the last decade.

These achievements include 90 percent increase in power generation capacity, renewable energy, progress in green hydrogen and biofuel as well as innovation in sustainable energy practice.

This international meeting is being held at a time when India has set ambitious targets regarding nuclear energy.

During a meeting of the Ministry of Power last month, the Union Minister had said that the government is aiming to increase the nuclear energy capacity to 100 GW by 2047 under the ‘Developed India’ approach.

India currently operates 25 nuclear reactors with a total installed capacity of 8,880 MW.

Eight more reactor with 6,600 MW are under construction, and additional 10 reactors (7,000 MW) are in pre-project stage.

The emphasis on nuclear energy is in line with India’s goal of obtaining pure-zero emissions by 2070, with nuclear energy, will play an important role in reducing dependence on fossil fuels and ensuring energy security.

The Union Minister said that nuclear energy can also be used beyond power generation – hydrogen production and space heating etc.
