New Delhi, 4 April (IANS). Indian Railways has manufactured 7,134 coaches in FY 25. It has recorded an increase of 9 percent on an annual basis.
In FY 24, Indian Railways manufactured 6,541 coaches.
In the last financial year, special emphasis was laid on non-AC coaches and 4,601 coaches were manufactured to meet the needs of the common man.
According to the Ministry of Railways, the annual average coach manufacturing has increased from 3,300 in 2004-14 to 5,481 in 2014-24 and a total of 54,809 coaches have been manufactured in the last decade.
This growth shows India’s growing emphasis on modernization of the railway infrastructure to meet the increasing passenger demand.
The country has three coach manufacturing units of Indian Railways, including Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, Rail Coach Factory (RCF) in Kapurthala, Punjab, Modern Coach Factory (MCF) in Rae Bareli, Uttar Pradesh.
According to the ministry, Chennai-based Indian Railways major passenger coach manufacturing unit Integral Coach Factory (ICF) has crossed its previous production record in the year 2024-25 and has prepared 3,007 coaches.
Coach manufacturing in India has increased significantly over the years. Between 2004 and 2014, Indian Railways made less than 3,300 coaches per year.
The ministry said that between 2014 and 2024, there was a big lead in railway coach manufacturing and during this time a total of 54,809 or an average of 5,481 coaches were manufactured. It is in accordance with the efforts of the Railways to provide better connectivity and become self -sufficient.
The increase in coach manufacturing is part of the broad effort to increase domestic production capabilities, reduce dependence on imports and integrate advanced technology in railway design.
According to the government, manufacturing more coaches can be fulfilled with better facilities and increasing demand for passengers.
Additionally, this feat strengthens ‘Make in India initiative’, which strengthens India’s position as a prominent player in railway manufacturing.
