New Delhi, Sep 1 (IANS) IndiGo Airlines on Sunday launched direct flights to Jaffna in Sri Lanka’s Northern Province. Earlier, there were flights only to Colombo.
It is the 34th international and 122nd overall destination in the airline’s rapidly growing network.
The leading aviation company said that the resumption of flights will strengthen the cultural and business ties between India and Sri Lanka.
Vinay Malhotra, Global Sales Head, IndiGo, said, “The new daily direct flight from Chennai to Jaffna will take just 75 minutes to reach Jaffna, giving a further boost to trade and tourism between India and Sri Lanka.”
The flight from Chennai at 13:55 will reach Jaffna at 15:10. Similarly, the flight from Jaffna will depart at 15:55 and reach Chennai at 17:10.
IndiGo said its direct flight will provide seamless connectivity and open up a new market for tourism.
Jaffna has a rich history and cultural significance. Its vibrant Tamil heritage is reflected in its traditions, festivals, and historical sites. Tourists can explore iconic sites such as the Jaffna Fort, which serves as an architectural testament to the region’s colonial past. Nallur Kandaswamy Kovil, an iconic Hindu temple, holds religious and cultural significance.
The company said that apart from the economic impact, the air connectivity will serve as a cultural and social bridge, promoting people-to-people contact, facilitating families to reunite, helping students access education, and allowing tourists to discover Jaffna’s unique heritage.
